After nearly seven decades of history, this cherished 1954 BMW R51/3 has been given new life through a meticulous mechanical restoration by MAX BMW's Heritage Service department in New Milford, CT.

The bike was purchased by its owner in 1961 and served as a faithful companion through his years at Pace University. In the time since, it has witnessed various chapters of storage - from spending decades under a protective cover in the owner's backyard to more recent years in a garage. In late 2023, MAX BMW undertook a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, rebuilding the crank, cylinders, and heads, while also repairing the suspension, and updating the wheels with new spokes and rims.

Here are photos of the project:

Although it was tempting to opt for a fresh coat of paint, the decision was made to preserve the motorcycle's original patina, allowing its weathered finish to tell the story of its 69-year journey. This thoughtful balance between mechanical restoration and aesthetic preservation has resulted in a machine that's ready for the road while maintaining its authentic historical character.

Every vintage motorcycle restoration that we do is approached with a deep respect for both the machine's history and its owner's vision. If you're looking for help writing the next chapter in your vintage BMW's story, please reach out - we'd love to hear more about your project.
